Major Letdown: Ukraine President Criticizes PM Modi Russia Trip!

On a two-day visit, PM Modi took a plane to Moscow and attempted to balance upholding long-standing connections with the West in the midst of the Ukraine President conflict.

Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s brief visit to Russia and his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded angrily.
Mr. Zelenskyy mentioned Russia’s attack on Monday, in which a missile strike on a children’s hospital in Kyiv resulted in the deaths of at least 37 people, including three children, in a post on X (previously Twitter).

Nearly 100 structures, including maternity facilities and schools, were also destroyed in the walkout.

He tweeted pictures of newborns in ambulances and the bombed hospital.

Following Prime Minister Modi’s embrace with President Putin in Moscow, Mr. Zelenskky posted. Images from their encounter featured Mr. Modi being driven around in a golf cart and the two leaders sipping tea on a patio at Mr. Putin’s house in Novo-Ogaryovo, outside of Moscow.

Particularly, a picture of Mr. Modi and Mr. Putin cuddling has gone viral on the internet.

And the Ukraine President was particularly critical of that image, posting, “It is a huge disappointment and a devastating blow to peace efforts to see the leader of the world’s largest democracy hug the world’s most bloody criminal in Moscow on such a day…”

The Prime Minister hasn’t been here before after being re-elected last month.

It’s also his first visit to Russia since the start of the conflict in Ukraine.

According to sources who spoke with NDTV, Mr. Modi emphasised during his discussion with Mr. Putin that there was no way to end the violence on the battlefield. “India has consistently advocated for upholding the territorial integrity and sovereignty guaranteed by the United Nations Charter. A solution does not exist in the battlefield. The best course of action is diplomacy and dialogue,” Mr. Modi is supposed to have stated.

Along with speaking with Mr. Zelenskyy on multiple occasions, Mr. Modi met with him last month in Italy for the G7 summit. The pair was seen giving each other hugs. They met in person for the first time since the start of the war in May of last year at the G7 conference, which Japan was hosting.

In a phone call with President Zelenskyy in October 2022, PM Modi said there can be “no military solution” and that India is ready to contribute to any peace efforts

Ever since the war began India has maintained it can only be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy, and the Prime Minister has said “India is ready to contribute to any peace efforts”.
