Nine more Zika virus cases have been verified in Pune, raising the total number of infections to 15, according to health officials on Tuesday. Two of the cases are pregnant women.

Nine new cases have been confirmed in the last week alone, which indicates a sharp increase in infections, according to officials.

Pune Municipal Corporation has sent 109 samples to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) lab for examination, and has been keeping a careful eye on the situation.

16 of the most recent samples that were sent were from pregnant women, indicating that maternal health was given more attention during the outbreak.

According to the information, one of the affected women lives near Sinhagad Road and is twelve weeks along with her unborn child. The second woman is seven weeks pregnant and lives in Yerawada.

The fact that both people are said to be in stable condition highlights the efforts made to give the required medical attention and supervision. A male has also been confirmed as a newly infected patient, in addition to the new cases.

Last week, six people, including two pregnant women, were infected with the Zika virus. Four of these cases were reported in the city’s Erandwane area and two in the Mundhwa area.

This prompted the Union Health Ministry to issue an advisory to all states, asking them to take the necessary precautions and make all efforts possible to keep further spread of the infection at bay.

Hospitals and healthcare facilities were also told to designate a nodal officer who would keep an eye on the area and take appropriate action to keep Aedes mosquitoes away.

Microcephaly, a disease in which the head is noticeably smaller due to faulty brain development, may be caused by the Zika virus in pregnant women.

An infected Aedes mosquito, which is also known to spread diseases including dengue and chikungunya, bites a person with the virus. In 1947, the virus was originally discovered in Uganda.
