Pakistan court ex-PM Imran Khan, wife in unlawful marriage case!

The pleas of the former prime minister and his wife, Bushra Bibi, have been deemed “accepted” by the Islamabad court.

According to his party and attorney, a Pakistani court cleared former prime minister Imran Khan and his spouse of all allegations related to an illegitimate marriage.

Days prior to Pakistan’s election in February, Khan, 71, and his spouse, Bushra Khan, popularly known as Bushra Bibi, received a seven-year term.

They were judged guilty at the time of violating Islamic law by not keeping the prescribed distance between Bibi’s divorce from her first marriage and her marriage to Khan.

However, Afzal Majoka, a judge of the Islamabad Additional District and Sessions Court, declared in court that the “appeals of both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi are accepted”.

Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party spokesman claimed the accusations had been “dismissed.”

However, Khan is still behind bars after a judge last week revoked his release due to allegations that he encouraged unrest among his followers in May 2023.

Earlier this month a UN panel of experts found Khan’s detention “had no legal basis and appears to have been intended to disqualify him from running for political office”.

“Thus, from the outset, that prosecution was not grounded in law and was reportedly instrumentalised for a political purpose,” it said, calling for his immediate release after nearly a year in jail.

Candidates loyal to Khan won the most seats in the national election, but were kept from government by an alliance of military-backed rival parties.

From 2018 to 2022, Khan led the country as prime minister. However, he was removed by a no-confidence vote following a rift with the military establishment, which has significant sway over civilian politics.

He spearheaded a campaign of disobedience in opposition to the top generals who had direct control over Pakistan for many of its formative years. He even accused them of trying to assassinate him, which resulted in injuries.
