Smriti Singh, the late Captain Anshuman Singh’s widow, recounted, “We had a long conversation on July 18 and on July 19 we got to know he is no more.” Captain Anshuman Singh was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra for exhibiting unwavering fortitude and making the ultimate sacrifice while doing his duties.
Captain Singh earned the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry medal, posthumously from President Droupadi Murmu, who is the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. Smriti accepted the award on Friday.
“On our first day at college, we got together. It was love at first sight, not to go too dramatic. He was accepted into Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) after a month. We met in an engineering college, and he was a very smart guy who was accepted to a medical school. Talking up to this point, she couldn’t control her emotions. The couple married in February 2023 after Anshuman Singh graduated from AFMC.
She then spoke about the last conversation she had with her husband before the fateful day.
“On July 18, we had a lengthy discussion about our plans for the next 50 years, including building a house, starting a family, and other things. “I wake up on the 19th and receive a call stating that he has passed away,” she uttered, her voice growing strained in the last words.
Smriti described the anguish her family experienced, saying, “We were unable to accept that anything of that nature had occurred for the first seven to eight hours.” As of now, I am not able to cope. Simply attempting to ascertain whether it is genuine or not. However, having the Kirti Chakra in my grasp, I can confirm that it is real. He is a hero, so it’s all good. He has managed a great deal, so we can manage a bit of our lives. In order to save the other three soldier families, he sacrificed both his life and his family.
Captain Singh showed extraordinary bravery and determination to save many lives during a significant fire event in Siachen, even at the expense of his personal safety.
Early in the wee hours of July 20, 2023, a short circuit caused a fire to break out in an Indian Army munitions stockpile near Siachen. Captain Singh bravely saved fellow soldiers who were stuck in a fiber-glass hut in the middle of the mayhem.
As the blaze spread to a nearby medical investigation shelter, Captain Singh made a valiant attempt to recover life-saving medicines. Unfortunately, he sustained severe burns and succumbed to his injuries.
