After the T20 World Cup this summer, Rahul Dravid, the men’s team’s current head coach, will step down.
The Indian senior men’s team head coach post was advertised on Monday by the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI), along with the qualifications it was looking for in a candidate. “Must be willing to meet work expectations and pressures associated with handling marquee athletes” and “developing a world-class Indian cricket team which delivers sustained success in all conditions and formats, inspiring current and future generations of cricketers and stakeholders with their approach to the game” were among the most noteworthy requirements listed by the BCCI for the new head coach.
Applications must be received by May 27, which is the day following the IPL 2024 final. The position in question is available from July 20, 24 to December 31, 2027, which is the year of the next ODI World Cup, according to the BCCI release.
The Indian cricket board will be accepting applications for the head coach position “soon,” according to BCCI Secretary Jay Shah’s announcement last week. Rahul Dravid, the head coach of the men’s team, whose contract with the team expires after the T20 World Cup in June, is eligible to reapply for the position.
“Rahul Dravid’s tenure is till the World Cup, we will be inviting applications soon for the post of head coach and if Dravid wants to re-apply, he can do it. We have decided the criteria. Thereafter we will invite applications for support staff in consultation with the Cricket Advisory Committee. The coach’s tenure will be of three years,” Shah had said.
Dravid took over his role as head coach in November 2021 after India’s exit from the T20 World Cup. The former India captain’s initial contract with the men’s team had come to an end following the ODI World Cup last year but his tenure was extended to this year’s T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA on the back of a runner-ups finish at the home World Cup.
But despite having led the dressing room during two finals finishes in the past year, under Dravid, India have been unable to end a 10-decade barren run of ICC trophies – their last piece of silverware still being the 2013 Champions Trophy win.
India return to action at the T20 World Cup, with their opening fixture against Ireland on June 5 in New York.
No more Rahul Dravid?
Jay Shah had previously said that current head coach Rahul Dravid was also eligible to reapply. Meanwhile, the BCCI top executive had also stated that he wasn’t sure if the new head coach for Men in Blue will be of Indian or foreign origin.
Shah said, “Rahul Dravid’s tenure is coming to an end. He has to reapply if he has to continue. We are looking for a long-term coach, for three years,”
