Sushil Kumar Modi, 72, was suffering from cancer
Sushil Modi, the former deputy chief minister of Bihar, lost his battle with kidney cancer on Monday. He was seventy-two.
According to sources at the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), the BJP leader passed away at the hospital at 9:45 p.m.
Modi had declared in April that he was afflicted with illness and had asked the party to release him from tasks pertaining to the impending Lok Sabha elections.
“I have been battling with cancer for the last six months,” he had stated in a message on the social media platform X, written in Hindi. I believe the timing is right to release it to the public. During the Lok Sabha elections, I would be unable to complete my duties. I’ve informed the PM about this. My appreciation to my party, Bihar, and the nation.”
“Heartfelt tribute to our dear friend, former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar and former Rajya Sabha MP Shri Sushil Kumar Modi ji on his demise,” former chief minister of Bihar Jitan Ram Manjhi said on social networking site X, expressing his condolences for Modi’s passing.
Over the course of two terms, from November 2005 to June 2013, and July 2017 to December 2020, Modi held the position of Deputy Chief Minister for Bihar for more than 11 years, forming a strong alliance with JD(U) Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
He served as an MP for the Rajya Sabha, an MLC, an MLA, and a member of the Lok Sabha during his three decades in politics. Along with leaders like Lalu and Nitish, he came out of the 1974 JP Movement and was regarded as the most powerful BJP figure since Kailashpati Mishra, the founder of the Bihar BJP.
