The trailer for Netflix’s newest Hindi film, “Wild Wild Punjab,” was unveiled on Monday. Though it succeeds in creating excitement and revealing the plot, the trailer also raises questions about how repetitious and monotonous the story may be. The film, which was directed by Simarpreet Singh, features an intriguing ensemble that includes, among others, Varun Sharma and Manjot Singh from “Fukrey,” Patralekhaa, Sunny Singh, Jassie Gill, and Ishita Raj.

‘Wild Wild Punjab’, as the title suggests, is set in the state, featuring a heartbroken Rajesh Khanna (Varun) who decides to take revenge on his girlfriend after she leaves him to get married to someone else. Unable to deal with the post-breakup trauma, he decides to attend her wedding to embarrass her and vows to scream “I am over you” in front of a hundred people. While Manjot’s character, Honey Singh, seems loud, something on the lines of what he has been playing in all his previous films, Patralekhaa’s Radha, regarded as ‘parjhai ji‘, looks timid and coy, a woman who doesn’t understand the many double-meaning conversations going on around her. Sunny Singh as Maan Arora adds to the whole ‘jigari yaari‘ trope and takes you back to his ‘Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety’ moments.

The creators of “Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar” and the “Pyaar Ka Punchnama” series, which received a lot of backlash for being misogynistic, are the ones behind “Wild Wild Punjab.” It will be fascinating to watch how the audience is impressed by this one given its abundance of desi jokes and the Punjabi passion in the conversation. It will be fascinating to observe, though, if the story’s creators are able to convey the tale without generalising about young men looking for love and Punjabis in particular. Right now, it appears to be mainly about their battle to maintain their masculine ego, their four best friends, and the ladies in their lives. ‘Wild Wild Punjab’ is premiering on Netflix on July 10. It is produced by Luv Ranjan and Ankur Garg.
