The Rumoured 4.26GHz Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is Designed to Beat the Apple A18/Pro.

It was previously stated that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 design, with a target frequency of 4.00GHz and beyond, would be finalised in April of this year. But in light of Apple’s M4 and its high clock rates, which enable the chipset to get a single-core score that breaks all previous records, Qualcomm is reportedly planning to release a redesigned chipset with a new target frequency of 4.26GHz. This modification is purportedly meant to compete with Apple’s future A18 and A18 Pro, which might potentially run at higher frequencies in order to outperform rivals.

TSMC’s 3nm “N3E” technology may enable the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 to reach its target frequency, although performance may suffer due to the purported lack of support for the ARMv9 architecture.

Before Qualcomm’s redesign is sent to its phone partners, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is anticipated to be unveiled in October. The San Diego-based business was probably taken aback by Apple’s announcement of the M4, as @jasonwill101 revealed on X that the next SoC will be modified. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 may see a significant improvement in single-core performance with its intended frequency of 4.26GHz, and with its rumoured “2 + 6” CPU cluster operating simultaneously, we should also see some excellent multi-core results.

Apple will most likely use this technology for the A18 and A18 Pro, providing them the same performance characteristics as the recently announced 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models, since the M4 is mass produced using TSMC’s second-generation 3nm process. It is also rumoured that Qualcomm will mass produce the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 on the same node, so benchmark comparisons should be very interesting. Nevertheless, the Snapdragon X Elite, which does not support the ARMv9 instruction set, is rumoured to be the foundation of the next smartphone chipset.

The chip will be fabricated on the same TSMC node as Apple M4

Qualcomm will use TSMC’s second-generation 3nm process to manufacture the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. That’s the same process Apple used for its M4 and will use for the A18 and A18 Pro. With a faster CPU, the new Snapdragon may be on par with the upcoming A-series Apple chips in raw performance. Qualcomm may have another reason to incorporate a faster CPU on the new chipset. It reportedly lacks Scalable Matrix Extension (SME).

It will be reportedly based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite chipset for Windows PCs. Since it does not support the ARMv9 instructions set, the new Snapdragon will lack SME. Effectively, it cannot manage complex workloads as efficiently as the M4. The lack of efficiency cores might also result in overheating when pushed to the limits. OEMs might have to rely on larger cooling systems to compensate for it. More details about the should surface in the coming months.

However, it will be up to phone makers to incorporate larger vapor chambers to allow the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 to run at its peak performance for sustained periods, or else all of that effort will go up in smoke. Hopefully, we will discover more in the coming months, so stay tuned.
