At age 46, voice actor Rachael Lillis, who portrayed beloved characters in the Pokémon series like Misty and Jessie, departed from this life on August 10. An idol in the anime and video game communities, Lillis has been fighting breast cancer since May.

Her co-star in Pokémon, Veronica Taylor, who provided the voice of Ash Ketchum, the main character, revealed the news of her passing. Taylor announced Lillis’s passing and honoured her friend and coworker in a moving note she shared on X, the former Twitter.
Taylor stated, “I share the news of Rachael Lillis’s passing on Saturday evening, August 10, 2024, with a weighty heart.” “Rachael had a remarkable gift; her voice, whether used for speech or singing, radiated brightness. She portrayed several animated characters for which she will always be recognized, the most well-known being Misty and Jessie from Pokémon. Rachael was incredibly appreciative of all the kind affection and assistance she received while battling illness. It did have a beneficial effect. While they take this time to grieve in privacy, her family also wants to express their gratitude. A memorial service is scheduled for a later time.

In the 1990s, Lillis started her career as a voice actor and soon rose to prominence in the animation industry. In the 1998 launch of the first Pokémon anime series, she provided the voice of Misty, the water-type gym leader. Misty rose to prominence in the Pokémon universe, ranking among the most recognizable characters along with Ash, Pikachu, and Brock. The notorious Jessie from Team Rocket, who together with her companion James and their talking Meowth became a cherished nemesis in the series, was also portrayed by Lillis.
In addition to her work on Pokémon, Lillis voiced several other characters, including the pink, singing Pokémon Jigglypuff, and the fish Pokémon Goldeen. Her voice work extended beyond the TV series to video games, including Nintendo’s popular Super Smash Bros. fighting game series.
