Twelve infants were rescued from the baby care center in the Vivek Vihar neighborhood of Delhi Hospital, according to officials, but seven of them passed away while undergoing treatment.
Authorities confirmed that a large fire that started late on Saturday at a children’s hospital in Delhi claimed the lives of at least seven babies.
At 11:32 p.m., the Delhi Fire Services reported receiving a call regarding a fire at a baby care center in the East Delhi neighborhood of Vivek Vihar. Up to 16 fire tenders were then dispatched to the scene.
Twelve babies were pulled from the building’s first floor, according to officials, but seven of them passed away while receiving hospital care.
At the moment, the hospital is treating five kids.
An investigation is ongoing to determine what caused the fire, and the hospital’s owner is the target of a lawsuit.
“Heart-rendering” is how Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal described the fire at the children’s hospital.
“The causes of the incident are being investigated and whoever is responsible for this negligence will not be spared,” he wrote in a post on X.
In a separate incident, at least three people died after a fire broke out at a residential building in Delhi’s Krishna Nagar early Sunday.
Delhi Fire Services chief Atul Garg said that they received a call about the fire at 2.35 am and that the fire was brought under control by 7.20 am.
“A total of 13 people were rescued but three were declared dead,” he said.
Earlier Saturday, twenty-seven people, including nine children, died in a massive fire that broke out at a gaming zone in Gujarat’s Rajkot.
“The bodies are completely charred and it is difficult to identify them,” Assistant Commissioner of Police Vinayak Patel said.
President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the incident.
