40 Indians Killed, 50 Injured In Kuwait Building Fire!

Kuwait Building Fire Live Updates: Minister of State Kirti Vardhan Singh said the latest statistics that ‘we had last night, the casualty figures are around 48-49 out of this 42 or 43 are likely to be Indians’.

Forty Indians were killed and 50 injured after a fire broke out in a building housing workers in Kuwait’s Mangaf city, the Ministry of External Affairs said. The fire, in which 49 people were killed, started at 6 am local time (9 am IST).

A tragic fire erupted in a kitchen within a six-storey building in Kuwait, officials reported. The building housed nearly 195 individuals, all workers of the same company. Most fatalities resulted from smoke inhalation as residents were asleep when the fire broke out.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a high-level review meeting and announced a compensation of ₹ 2 lakh for the families of the deceased. He expressed condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a swift recovery.

Following the Prime Minister’s directives, the Ministry of External Affairs announced that Minister of State Shri Kirti Vardhan Singh would immediately travel to Kuwait. His mission includes expediting the repatriation of mortal remains and ensuring medical assistance for the injured.

The injured are receiving treatment in five government hospitals in Kuwait: Adan, Jaber, Farwaniya, Mubarak Al Kabeer, and Jahra. According to hospital authorities, most patients are stable.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar discussed the situation with his Kuwaiti counterpart, Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya, who provided updates on the ongoing efforts by local authorities. Jaishankar emphasized the need for a thorough investigation and swift repatriation of the deceased’s bodies.

The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the Indian embassy in Kuwait is in continuous contact with local authorities. A helpline (+965-65505246) has been set up for family members seeking information.

Indian Ambassador Adarsh Swaika has visited the fire site and the hospitals treating the injured.

In response to the tragedy, Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, the Emir of Kuwait, ordered a full investigation and accountability for those responsible. The Kuwait Times reported that First Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousuf Al-Sabah ordered the arrest of the building’s owner, janitor, and the company owner responsible for the workers, pending the criminal investigation.

Indians make up 21 percent of Kuwait’s population (about 10 lakh) and 30 percent of its workforce (approximately 9 lakh). The other casualties reportedly included individuals from Pakistan, the Philippines, Egypt, and Nepal.
