He was born Kapil Punj on April 2, 1981, in Amritsar, Punjab, India. His family was from a lower-middle-class background. His father is named Jeetendra Kumar Punj and used to be a head policeman for the Punjab Police. Kapil’s mother is named Janak Rani and works as a housewife. His father got cancer in 1997 and died in 2004 at the AIIMS hospital in Delhi, after a seven-year battle with the disease.
