On Friday, a poorly designed software update from CrowdStrike crashed countless Microsoft Windows computers, causing disruptions to banking, financial markets, air travel, and other services.
In a statement, George Kurtz, CEO of CrowdStrike, said that a single update caused the disruption. When questioned about this assertion, hours after the outage, he went on NBC’s Today TV show and looked anxious.
“You claim that a single content update was responsible for the global shutdown of banks, credit card payment systems, airlines, street lights, 911, and emergency services. Why is there no backup or redundancy system in place? The journalist questioned Kurtz, “How is it that a single software bug can have such a profound and immediate impact?”

The CrowdStrike CEO stumbled over his words and had to take a sip of water to get his words out. On the social media site X, a video of the incident has amassed millions of views after becoming popular online.
Security experts claim that CrowdStrike’s usual upgrade of its popular cybersecurity software appears not to have undergone sufficient quality checks before deployment, as seen by the global computer system crashes caused by the malware on Friday.

By updating the threats it fights against, the most recent version of Falcon Sensor software was designed to increase the security of CrowdStrike clients’ systems against hacking. However, according to news agency Reuters, bad code in the update files caused one of the most extensive computer breakdowns for businesses using Microsoft’s Windows operating system in recent years.
