Buddha Purnima 2024 History

Lord Buddha exact birth and death dates are uncertain, but historians generally place his lifespan between 563 and 483 BC. At the age of 35, Gautam Buddha—who was born in Lumbini, Nepal—attained Nirvana. Buddha Purnima is a day set aside for contemplation of the three main tenets of Buddhism: enlightenment, serenity, and compassion. The festival falls on the same day as Vesak in several regions of South and Southeast Asia, which commemorates the enlightenment and Nirvana of the Buddha. The festival provides an opportunity to share the word about harmony and peace.

In the meantime, three important occasions in Gautam Buddha’s life occurred on this day, which makes the full moon noteworthy in Buddhism. Given that Lumbini Grove is the birthplace of Prince Siddhartha, the May full moon is particularly significant. Second, after six years of suffering, Prince Siddhartha Gautam became Gautama Buddha at Bodh Gaya, where he attained enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree’s shadow. Thirdly, at the age of eighty, he died at Kusinara to Nibbana (Nirvana), which is the cessation from the cycle of reincarnation, following forty-five years of teaching the Truth.
