TREATMENT
Depending on the diagnosis, breast cancer can be treated in several ways.
It can be treated through surgery by removing the tumor through lumpectomy or mastectomy. Radiation therapy, a using high-energy waves, are also used to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy involves using drugs, while hormone therapy helps blocking hormones that fuel certain cancers.
Besides this, immunotherapy is done to boost the body’s immune system to fight cancer.
WHY IS BREAST CANCER SO COMMON IN INDIA?
As compared to Western countries, Indian women have a lower survivability rate. The incidence of breast cancer is increasing because of several factors.
According to Dr Pritam Kataria, Consultant, Medical Oncology, Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, since this type of cancer is highly prevalent, the age group is not well-defined.
“It can happen in young females, in middle-aged females, as well as in the older women. Though, what we need to understand is that the rising incidence is making large concerns globally. The risk factors of the breast cancer can be modifiable and non-modifiable,” said Dr Kataria.

Obesity is one of the changeable risk factors, but early menarche and late menopause are among the non-modifiable ones.
“An additional risk factor is not having children or having children later in life. Dr. Kataria continued, “Alcohol and smoking are two more factors in breast cancer.
The expert stated that a healthy diet, regular exercise, stress management, abstaining from alcohol and tobacco, and other lifestyle-related variables can all help to reduce the occurrence of breast cancer.
She asserted, “We have control over these factors.”
