Aston Villa vs Liverpool: Jhon Duran’s two late goals put Unai Emery’s side on brink of Champions League

Two goals from Colombian substitute Jhon Duran saw Aston Villa salvage a 3-3 draw with Liverpool at Villa Park. Unai Emery’s side are now five points clear of Tottenham in the race for fourth as Jurgen Klopp is denied victory in penultimate Liverpool gam

  • Aston Villa vs Liverpool. Premier League.
  • 8:00pm, Monday 13th May 2024.
  • Villa Park.

Aston Villa

  • Y Tielemans (12’12th minute)
  • J Durán (85’85th minute, 88’88th minute)

Liverpool

  • E Martinez (2’2nd minute ogown goal)
  • C Gakpo (23’23rd minute)
  • J Quansah (48’48th minute)

After starting the game as a substitute, Jhon Duran scored twice to help Aston Villa draw 3–3 with Liverpool, virtually guaranteeing them a spot in the Champions League the next year.

Villa had the worst possible start after Emiliano Martinez’s early own goal, but Youri Tielemans pulled them even, and midway through the first half, Cody Gakpo gave Liverpool the lead again. Early in the second quarter, Jarell Quansah scored a third.

Diego Carlos made a spectacular miss close to the goal line that would have tied the score, while Ollie Watkins also had a goal disallowed for offside. However, late in the game, Duran’s outstanding intervention changed the game and allowed Unai Emery’s team to salvage a draw.

Due to the comeback, Villa would definitely finish fourth if Tottenham lost their Tuesday night match against Manchester City at home. In his last away game as manager of Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp had an unexpected but spectacular ending.

The world’s top scorer, Martinez, had been introduced by the Aston Villa announcer, but it took Argentina’s World Cup champion 62 seconds to be humbled in front of the Holte End, as he pushed the ball into his own net to give Liverpool the lead.

Even though Pau Torres diverted Harvey Elliott’s cross, the custodian should have had an easy time stopping it. Rather, he attempted to grab the ball, failed, and let it strike his chest. He grabbed it from behind him and shoved it in out of panic. A massive mistake.

Aston Villa vs Liverpool Team news

  • Aston Villa brought Youri Tielemans into their team after recovering from a knock – the only change from the defeat in Greece with Matty Cash not in the squad.
  • Jurgen Klopp made one change to the Liverpool side who beat Tottenham with Joe Gomez filling in at left-back with Andy Robertson unavailable.

Soon after, Mohamed Salah came dangerously near, but Watkins’s outstanding move levelled the score for Villa. He pulled the ball back for Tielemans to smash home the equaliser after outwitting Quansah in the left channel. The beginning was atypically open, and that remained so all the way through.

Liverpool’s comeback to take the lead was highlighted when Gakpo tapped home the cross after Luis Diaz found Joe Gomes on the overlap. The finish at the opposite end was very simple, but Diego Carlos managed to miss that opportunity for some reason.

The Match in Stats

This was just the second time Liverpool have failed to win a Premier League game having led by two or more goals as late as the 84th minute, also drawing 3-3 with Southampton in August 2000.
Cody Gakpo’s strike to put Liverpool 2-1 ahead was the 1,196th Premier League goal of 2023-24 (now 1,199) making it the second-highest scoring season in the competition’s history after 1992-93 (1,222).
Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez scored his third own goal in the Premier League, the most ever scored by a goalkeeper in the competition’s history.
Liverpool have conceded two or more goals in four consecutive Premier League games for the first time since 2014.
Harvey Elliott assisting Jarell Quansah is the first time two English players aged 21 or younger have combined for a Premier League goal for Liverpool since Steven Gerrard assisted Michael Owen against Blackburn in 2001.

Player of the Match: Jhon Duran

“Big Jhon is a bit nuts and is a nightmare to have in your team but he has got quality,” Villa captain McGinn told Sky Sports. “We need to keep his feet on the ground over the next couple of days.” When those comments were put to Emery, he elaborated.

“He is very young, 20 years old but his potential is impossible to calculate or predict,” said the Villa boss. “But I believe in him.”

Emery added: “Football is different in Colombia. Tactically, this is the most difficult league in the world. You have to be compact always. We are working with him a lot to be very demanding. When he is not [demanding of himself], I am pushing him.

“But I know he will score, I know he will create chances. Today, I am very happy with how he helped us.”
