After becoming stuck in the flooded basement of a coaching institution in Old Rajendra Nagar, Delhi, three students passed away on Saturday. The three victims’ bodies were discovered by the local police and the rescue crews of the NDRF a few hours after the region had flooded.

The three victims were Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) candidates enrolled at Rau’s IAS coaching facility, according to the police.
The identities of the three victims are Nivin Dalwin from Ernakulam, Kerala; Tanya Soni from Telangana; and Shreya Yadav from Ambedkar Nagar, Uttar Pradesh.
According to the Delhi police, the victims’ bodies have currently been taken to the RML mortuary.

Details about the Delhi flood incident
The Delhi Fire Department was notified at around 7 p.m. on Saturday about waterlogging at the Rao IAS Study Centre and in the Karol Bagh area. Two or three students were reportedly trapped in a flooded basement, according to the police. They arrived to find the basement completely submerged in water. Rainwater kept flowing into the basement, making it difficult to pump out the water. But, as the road water subsided, they could lower the water level from 12 feet to eight feet and recover the students’ remains.
There were around 30 students in the coaching center, of whom 12 to 14 were rescued and taken to a hospital, while others managed to escape.

The rescue operation has been completed, said the police, adding that an inquiry will be conducted to determine how the water entered the basement and why a class was being held there.
Meanwhile, the police detained the owner and coordinator of the coaching center and registered a criminal case over the deaths of the students.

Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi has also directed the MCD Commissioner that strict action should be taken against such coaching centers across Delhi which are under the jurisdiction of MCD and running commercial activities in basements which are in violation of building bye-laws and are not as per norms. She added that an immediate inquiry will be conducted to identify if any officers of MCD are responsible for this tragedy. If any official is found guilty, the strongest possible action must be taken against them, she said.
